Scalp build up: Definition, causes, and how to get rid of it

Scalp gunk takes place on an oily scalp. However, it may arise due to many reasons like sweat, different types of hair products, dead skin cells, and so on. it has similar types of symptoms like those of scalp psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema. In each of these conditions, scalp build-up appears in the hair and scalp.

What are the symptoms of scalp buildup?

Along with flaking, scalp buildup causes the following symptoms that include –

  • Itchiness
  • Crusty or oily skin
  • Redness of the skin

If someone is suffering from these problems or continuously noticing these symptoms, it is suggested to take the advice of a dermatologist or a skincare specialist. These conditions can be treated with direct medications.

What causes scalp buildup?

Scalp buildup can be the result of one or more substances that are stuck on the scalp and build up over time. it causes extreme itchiness, and scratching your scalp for a long time may lead to bleeding. Therefore, such types of scalp problems should be treated at the earliest; otherwise, it will spread the entire and make you feel uneasy and embarrassed.

Scalp buildup can be treated in two ways – one is medicated products and the other natural substances.

Different types of substances that we use regularly get accumulated on the hair and scalp. Some of the examples are –

  • Conditioners
  • Styling gel or cream
  • Ointments
  • Shampoo
  • Foams
  • Gel

Some substances that a person’s head naturally produces can also be caught in the hair and scalp, such as sweat, sebum that the body produces to soften the hair and scalp skin, dead skin cells, and so on.

How to get rid of this scalp buildup?

As has already been mentioned that home remedies or treatments are the primary ways to get rid of and prevent scalp buildup. But if you need fast results, then using medicated products is the best option, following the advice of a skin specialist or dermatologist. However, you can try out some simple options which may prove helpful for you, such as

  • Brushing hair regularly to prevent tangled hair
  • Using an exfoliator on the scalp to prevent scalp buildup
  • Choosing a shampoo or a conditioner that work as per the person’s hair type
  • Washing hair on a regular basis – daily washing for oily hair and every few days for dry hair.

However, a person living with dermatitis may require additional medical treatment. Taking a doctor’s suggestion is mandatory to deal with such situations.

Prevention

Here prevention means proper hair care. A person should always keep his or her hair clean, and along with this, he or she needs to change certain habits such as –

  • Reducing the amount of hair products they use more often
  • Washing dry hair less often and oily hair almost every day
  • Washing the scalp thoroughly and rinse it off
  • Wearing a swimming cap while swimming to provide protection to hair

A person must take advice from a dermatologist about which shampoo or conditioner to use.
